Trebbiano, the convivial and party-loving wine

Trebbiano is one of the most widely planted wine grape varieties in Italy and it boasts quite ancient origins. Indeed, it seems it was quite appreciated by the ancient Romans, some say even by the Etruscans. Delicate, fruity, light and markedly fresh, it is perfect for any convivial event, such as parties and receptions where the aim is to please all palates and offer a highly drinkable aperitif.

When speaking of Trebbiano, however, one cannot refer to a single variety but rather to a veritable family of varieties coming under five great groups all recognised and distributed across central Italy: Trebbiano Spoletino, Trebbiano Giallo, Trebbiano Romagnolo, Trebbiano Toscano, Trebbiano d’Abruzzo.

The latter deserves special attention in order to reveal the peculiar characteristics that have made Abruzzo one of the regions of excellence thanks to its dedication to growing Trebbiano grapevines of great quality.

Features and history of Trebbiano: do we really know everything about this variety?

Pliny the Elder is one of the first to mention Trebbiano in his Naturalis Historia, defining it as a “Vinum Trebulanum“, loosely translatable into ‘country wine’ or ‘home-made wine’. More precisely, a simple white berry wine that is highly popular and that often accompanies moments of feasting, preferred for its freshness and pleasing taste.

Trebbiano’s diffusion and resilience have often led producers to snub the variety and to produce large quantities of these wine grapes, often using them for blending with other wine grape varieties. It is precisely this great adaptability that today brings us highly pleasing wines, all similar and yet all different one from the other thanks to the nuances conferred by its different cultivation terroirs.

Even though it tends to take root very easily in various types of soil, Trebbiano is at its best in hilly and well exposed locations. Dry, harmonic and acidulous, it also features a pleasing minerality and sapidity, especially when grown close to the coast such as is the case with Trebbiano d’Abruzzo.

Let’s examine the Abruzzo variety more closely, then, since it is one of the most renowned and acclaimed for its truly interesting characteristics.

Rediscovering Trebbiano d’Abruzzo

The florid and enchanting region of Abruzzo, featuring a prevailingly mountainous and hilly landscape, looks out onto the Adriatic Sea, providing a Trebbiano that features floral scents and fruity taste with decidedly harmonious acidity and sapidity on the palate. To the eye it is straw-yellow in colour with greenish hues that are more or less intense based on its vintage. It is an extremely pleasing wine, ideal as an aperitif as well as an accompaniment to the whole meal, pairing perfectly with fried foods, fish and pasta dishes with delicate sauces.

Trebbiano, though, is especially a party wine that has consistently accompanied the Abruzzo region’s traditional and popular festivities, such as Ju Catenacce, the ancient nuptial procession of Scanno, the splendid ancient town that holds this charming historical pageant on the 14th of August of each year.

The procession is a veritable ‘chain’ procession that accompanies the bride first to the church and then to the house of the new husband and in which the women wear the traditional costume and the original headdress decorated with large, shiny braids of silk. It is a fascinating and thrilling spectacle that we expect to be accompanied by a chalice of Trebbiano d’Abruzzo to toast the bride and groom with!

Trebbiano d’Abruzzo D.O.P. Teatro Latino, a marriage of flavours and culture

When speaking of Trebbiano d’Abruzzo we cannot help but mention Teatro Latino, an Italian brand that for many years now has been selecting quality wines by searching the Italian territory for the treasures and traditions that make Made in Italy unique throughout the world.

Among the many voyages in the name of taste that the Teatro Latino team has engaged in when exploring Italy and its wines, the trip to Abruzzo was a must. This resulted in Trebbiano d’Abruzzo D.O.P. Teatro Latino, a fresh, mineral and fruity wine that thrills the nose with its delicate notes of acacia flower, silky hints of peach and intense fragrances of apple.

A perfect choice for aperitifs and festive banquets, it is also ideal, thanks to its good body, as an accompaniment to seafood dishes, soups and savoury creams, all abundantly featured in Abruzzo’s cuisine.

A trip to Abruzzo that is expressed also through the label, entirely dedicated to the special headdress that the women wear during the traditional Ju Catenacce procession.

Scents, fragrances, ancient customs and Italian culture, all enclosed in a unique, pleasing sip of Trebbiano d’Abruzzo. Irresistible!
